Construction Applications Overview
Wire mesh appears throughout the construction process, from foundation to finish:
- Concrete reinforcement — Slabs, walls, precast elements (see dedicated guide)
- Plaster/stucco mesh — Crack prevention under render and stucco
- Masonry reinforcement — Wall ties, ladder reinforcement, bed joint reinforcement
- Safety barriers — Edge protection, debris netting, guardrails
- Scaffolding — Work platforms, toe boards, enclosure screens
- Gabions — Retaining walls, erosion control, architectural features
Plaster & Stucco Mesh
Wire mesh under plaster and stucco prevents cracking from thermal movement and substrate irregularities:
Expanded Metal Lath
Diamond-pattern expanded steel with integral ribs. Traditional choice for stucco and render. Provides strong key for mortar.
- + Superior mortar key
- + Self-furring options available
- − Heavier, more expensive
Welded Wire Mesh
Lightweight welded mesh (typically 25-50mm aperture). Economical for large areas and less demanding applications.
- + Economical, lightweight
- + Easy to cut and fit
- − Less effective mortar key
Galvanizing requirement: Exterior applications require hot-dip galvanized mesh (minimum Z275 or equivalent) to prevent rust staining through finish.
Masonry Reinforcement
Wire mesh reinforces block and brick walls against cracking:
- Ladder reinforcement — Two longitudinal wires with cross wires, placed in horizontal mortar joints. Standard widths: 50mm, 75mm, 100mm.
- Truss reinforcement — Diagonal cross wires forming truss shape. Greater stiffness for longer spans.
- Wall ties — Connect cavity wall leaves, typically 3-5mm diameter galvanized wire.
- Bed joint reinforcement — Continuous mesh in mortar beds over openings and at floor levels.
Standards: ASTM A951 for masonry joint reinforcement, local building codes for spacing and placement requirements.
Safety & Temporary Works
Construction sites use wire mesh for worker protection and debris containment:
Edge Protection
Guardrail systems with welded mesh infill panels. Prevents falls and dropped objects. Typically 1.1m height with toe board.
Debris Netting
Fine mesh screens attached to scaffolding. Contains dust, debris, and tools. Fire-retardant options for hot work areas.
Scaffold Enclosures
Weather protection and containment screens. Allows work to continue in adverse conditions while protecting public below.
Temporary Fencing
Construction site perimeter security. Chain link or welded panels on temporary posts. See fence guide.
Material Standards for Construction
| Application | Standard | Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete reinforcement | ASTM A1064 | Weld shear strength, yield strength |
| Masonry reinforcement | ASTM A951 | Wire diameter, spacing, coating |
| Plaster lath | ASTM C847 | Weight, rib height, coating |
| Safety barriers | OSHA/EN standards | Load capacity, height, mesh size |
Sourcing Construction Mesh
Bundle by application
Different construction meshes often come from different factory types. Concrete reinforcement from heavy mesh producers; plaster mesh from lighter mesh specialists. Consider separate sourcing for optimal pricing.
Verify coating specifications
"Galvanized" ranges from electroplated (thin, indoor only) to hot-dip (thick, outdoor). Specify coating weight (g/m²) or ASTM coating class.
Plan for site storage
Mesh arrives in compact bundles or rolls. Ensure dry storage to prevent premature rusting, especially for uncoated or lightly coated products.
