Factors Affecting Screen Life
Understanding wear mechanisms helps optimize screen selection and replacement timing:
- Abrasion — Gradual wire diameter reduction from material sliding. Dominant in dry screening.
- Impact — Wire breakage from large material drops. Dominant in scalping and primary screens.
- Corrosion — Chemical attack in wet or acidic environments. Requires stainless or coated wire.
- Fatigue — Cyclic loading from vibration. Exacerbated by improper tensioning.
- Pegging/blinding — Material stuck in apertures, reducing open area and increasing local stress.
Screen Sizing & Specification
Mining screens are typically specified by:
- Aperture size — Square (e.g., 25mm) or rectangular (e.g., 50×75mm)
- Wire diameter — Thicker wires last longer but reduce open area
- Panel dimensions — Standard widths (1m, 1.5m, 2m) with custom lengths
