Hexagonal Wire Mesh

Hexagonal wire mesh — also called chicken wire, poultry netting, or hex mesh — is woven from galvanized or PVC-coated wire in a hexagonal pattern. Anping factories produce it for poultry fencing, rockfall protection, gabion boxes, and garden applications.

What to specify when ordering

  1. Opening size in mm (mesh count is NOT used for hexagonal wire)
  2. Wire diameter and coating type (electro vs hot-dip vs PVC)
  3. Roll width and length
  4. Total quantity in m² or rolls
  5. For gabions: whether mesh needs to be woven or welded, and cell size

FAQ

What's the difference between hexagonal wire mesh and welded wire mesh?

Hex mesh is woven — wires twist around each other in a hexagonal pattern, giving flexibility and conformability. Welded wire mesh has wires welded at intersections, creating rigid squares or rectangles. Hex is cheaper and better for curved surfaces (gabions, poultry); welded is stronger and better for flat panels.

How long does galvanized hex mesh last outdoors?

Electro galvanized (7–15 g/m² zinc): 1–3 years. Hot-dip galvanized (40–60 g/m²): 5–10 years. Galfan (Zn-Al alloy): 15–25 years even in marine environments. PVC coating adds cosmetic protection but the wire underneath still determines structural life.

Can I use hex mesh for gabion boxes?

Yes — woven hex mesh is the traditional gabion material. For permanent structures, specify Galfan or heavy hot-dip zinc coating, 2.0mm+ wire, and 50–75mm openings. Welded gabions (like our gabion baskets) are newer and more rigid but cost more.

What mesh opening for chickens vs rabbits?

Chickens: 25mm opening keeps predators out. Rabbits: 20mm or 25mm. Small birds/quail: 13mm. For garden pest control against rabbits, 25mm with 1.0mm+ wire is standard.

Is PVC coated hex mesh safe for animals?

Yes, if the coating is UV-stabilized and lead-free. Ask for a coating thickness report (usually 0.4–0.6mm PVC over galvanized core). Green and black are standard colors; custom colors need larger MOQs.

How do I calculate how many rolls I need?

Measure fence length × height = m² needed. Divide by roll coverage (width × length). Add 5–10% for overlaps and cuts. Use our container loading calculator to plan shipment.
